Keeping Focus

Three times a year, in the fall, winter, and spring, the Community United Methodist Church in Vincennes has a breakfast to honor the fall, winter, and spring Knox County athletes in conjunction with their FCA huddles.  While coaching at Vincennes, this was something that I really looked forward to. The people there at the church do a wonderful job and the huddle sponsors work with that specific sport season’s coaches to promote it among our athletes.  The CUMC along with FCA sponsors always try to get a speaker to come in and motivate the student-athletes to do their best in representing their schools and communities as well as keeping their focus on Christ.

At the fall 2017 meeting the CUMC pastor, Stacy Downing, shared with the Knox County FCA members and athletes a message about focus.  She shared the story of Peter from the book of Matthew. As she talked about having success as an athlete and having a focus and vision in our training and play, she compared it to how Peter walked across the water to Jesus.  One thing in particular that she focused on was how Peter was fine until right before he got to Jesus. When he was so close to his goal, that is when he took his eyes off of Jesus, focused on the roaring waves, and lost focus on what was most important.  She told the kids that we have to remain focused, but so many times in life when we get so close to where we want to be in our walk with the Lord or close to a goal, we allow ourselves to lose focus.

As we coaches make plans for the upcoming off-season; reflect on the season that was; and develop our visions of what we are going to do with our teams, let us keep our focus where it needs to be.  Be men of faith who lead your team with integrity, showing your players how to be men of faith, keeping your eyes on the prize and not losing focus no matter what the crashing waves of the season may bring.

Dare to be Different

Ready

But ye are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession; so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. — 1 Peter 2:9

Set

It has been proven that even identical twins have different DNAs. If that is the case, what is God telling us about our uniqueness? I believe He is telling us to be different, not to conform to the world’s standards, to be in the world but not of the world. I know this is hard and seems to be a paradox, especially in a world where we are told to be a team player—not an individual—or to play, coach, or live for our own agendas.

God does expect us to be a team player, yet He calls us to be different at the same time. In football, everyone wears the same uniform, yet has different responsibilities. We are the Body of Christ, one team, united under the blood-stained banner, yet all with diverse responsibilities and gifts. First Peter 2:9 gives us guidance on daring to be different. As we read that passage, we see that we are all on one team—in the world but not of the world—and that we are called to be different. God’s guidance on being different includes:

Selected. God chose you to be different from everyone else.

Servant. God called you to service.

Sanctified. God set you apart for an eternal purpose.

Zealous. We should be excited to be on His team, the winning team!

Go

1. How are you coaching differently from your peers?

2. Are you coaching Christ’s way no matter what?

3. Are you spending time with God daily to hear His instructions and gain His strength so you can stand firm?
